How To Impress Your Basketball Coaches at Tryouts

What’s going on?

It’s Brandon from Next Level Basketball.

I just wanted to give you my answer to a problem that hundreds of
my players deal with each year…

“Coach B, I’m nervous for tryouts.”

It’s normal. It really is.

I still remember my tryouts from middle school, all the way to
college.

I still remember the air balled warm up shots and the nerves.

But, my response is usually pretty simple…

“Are you prepared? Have you put in the work?”

The reality is… if you have put in the reps– and if you have
made sure your form was right before you did– you’re ready
physically- especially at the middle school and JV level.

If you’re physically ready, that IMMEDIATELY separates you from the
majority of the guys trying out.

But, what you need to know is that you’re not alone.

Everyone is nervous.

Everyone has self doubt.

Some people have it for a reason. They’re not physically prepared.

So if you are, all you need to do is be you. Play your game 100%
and you’ll be fine.

So with no further ado…

Here are 3 things you MUST do to separate yourself at your tryout:

1) Talk to the coach.

Show him you’re respectful. Show him you’re coachable.

I recommend that all of my players ask the coaches if there’s
anything in particular they would like to see from the players
trying out. This shows them that you’re extremely coachable and
eager to pick up what they’re teaching.

2) Assert yourself

You know your skillset. The coach doesn’t.

I tell all my players to be aggressive. If you’re a shooter, pull
the trigger. One shot won’t make or break you, but shooting none
will.

3) Hustle and Do the Little Things

The one area you can control is hustle. Every coach loves hustle.

Great hustle and smart basketball can make up for a lot of things.
On every single team I’ve coached, I have had a player or two who
wasn’t nearly as talented as the others, but hustled harder. As a
coach, you need those guys.

Let’s get it.

Coach Jay and 6’5″ FIU guard and NBA Draft prospect Tymell Murphy have been in the lab not only working on the court, but preparing for the next level in the film room, a staple of what we do at Next Level Basketball Training in North Miami. In this example we go over the side pick-and-roll, which Ty devours against poor defense in which the defender fails to force his man sideline and gives up the middle of the floor. Good spacing and middle penetration make good offense.

Vertical Jump: Isolated Hip Flexor Work- Basketball Training in Hollywood, FL

Here’s a clip of isolated Hip Flexor and agility training in Hollywood, FL with Hillsborough Community College signee Isaiah Thomas, who is in the lab with Coach Jay’s patented basketball training in Hollywood, FL. Isaiah is a raw talent and the agility training has helped take his game up a notch, given his naturally light physique.

At the beginning of the clip, you’ll see what is a staple of our vertical jump and agility training in Hollywood, FL. The resisted high knees, and resisted explosion work helps our Hollywood basketball training clients is a great, natural way to build on the explosive vertical jump training work that is done with personal trainers in Hollywood, FL in the weight room.

Next, you’ll see that we’re on the agility training ladder isolating our muscles that help us stabilize and move laterally. This is part of a full, well-balanced agility circuit that our Hollywood Basketball training clients go through. We also isolate each leg individually, focusing on moving north & south, as well as straight up, in later exercises on the agility ladder.

Once we’re done with plyometrics and the resistance work, we’re onto the specific basketball training in Hollywood, FL. At this point, we go through game situations, and get repetitions, working on exploding and maximizing every rep.

Much more tips for all of our Hollywood basketball training clients coming soon. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook for more!

New Teaching Point: Shooting Runners – Miami Beach Basketball Training

Teaching Point: Floaters can primarily be done in three ways. With one leg and one hand, a form shot runner off of one leg, and a jump stop into a one leg float. Two of those are pictured here in our Miami Beach Basketball Training. With floaters, you generally want to get the ball high to avoid the block and it’s a useful part of any wing players arsenal.
The players in the video with Coach Jay at a Miami Beach basketball training session are Chris Lofton (@c_lofton) who recently played for Beşiktaş in the Turkish Basketball League and was All-SEC at Tennessee, and Alexander Fomin (@alexanderfomin), one of the best combo forwards in Russia. Alexander is with us getting basketball training in Miami Beach all summer, and is looking to participate in NBA Summer League this year.

The Science Behind Skills: Tennis Ball Drills — Boca Raton Basketball Training

By Jared Shand

When I first began my skill development journey as a Boca Raton Basketball trainer, I was deeply entrenched in nursing school. Since I didn’t have a storied playing pedigree to help me, I decided I would need a different angle than most in the business to succeed. To meet this end, I immersed myself in the science behind why each drill was relevant to the boca raton basketball training game. I found how the basketball drills related to a student’s neural development, cognitive perception and muscle physiology gains.

Tennis ball basketball drills are great because they enhance many different processes in the skill world. Here are some they work on:

First, they give you a timing accountability partner to work with. Making moves in an open gym with noone guarding you is as unrealistic as it gets in relation to game-like situations. When you add a tennis ball to grab, you become accountable to make your move quickly and at the right time. This in turn makes every move more game like. If you aren’t accountable to something in training, then you’re accountable to nothing. Without accountability, nothing you do matters on the same level.

Another thing about making moves in an open gym is the brain only has to process the move you’re making at that moment. There are no other distractions the brain must take into account while making that move. Anyone who has played knows that during a game, you are processing a number of different things (matchups, screens, back cuts, time on the clock, etc..). The more dribbling reps you can get while processing something else, the more you are making your moves “game-like reps.” The more reps you can get while processing something else, the quicker you can get that operation to the “automatic portion” of your brain. Once you can make a move without spending any brain energy on it, you become free to really analyze the floor while making the move. This is one of the key factors in developing court vision or “basketball I.Q.”

The last thing tennis ball drills do is really work on that off-hand development. This is a training cornerstone of many of the best basketball trainers in the world including Damin Altizer, Micah Lancaster and Tyler Relph. Too many players forget about that other hand and it’s defensive ability while dribbling. Swiping and snatching a tennis ball after a move really grooves the same neural pathways that are used in off-hand protection of a live dribble and creating an ambidextrous basketball brain.
