How to be Better

Some of you Miami basketball players are wondering, ”why am I not getting better? I work so hard. I even added ball handling work or passing…”

I’ve been there– everyone has. And there are a few possible explanations.

A few things to consider:
1) If you’re doing more ball handling in the same time frame, that means you’re doing less of everything else. If you add something, add it, don’t substitute it. You’ll never grow that way.

2) You’re not pushing yourself! Don’t get settled into a routine longterm. Routines are designed to cover your bases. Every day, do something that you didn’t last practice– be it 10 extra minutes doing sprints, or 50 extra shots, that is how you grow!

3) You may be practicing hard, but you’re not practicing smart. See the Isaiah Thomas quotes from last blog and the following Michael Jordan quote, “You can practice shooting eight hours a day, but if your technique is wrong, then all you become is very good at shooting the wrong way. Get the fundamentals down and the level of everything you do will rise.” This is where getting a shooting coach, or a skills & fundamentals trainer, like coach Brandon Harris, is undeniably essential.

Work with me. I will push you, you will get your work in and you will practice right — hard and smart.

You will get better, I guarantee it.

Don’t Practice Just to Practice

As Isaiah Thomas says, “don’t shoot to shoot, shoot to make the basket!” Players seem perfectly content shooting with their left hand out to twenty feet, but how many of them can consistently make that shot with their strong hand? Not many.

It seems today there is way too much walk through and not enough game speed. This is where the lazy player, the practice all-star and the “soft” big man come from. The practice all-star loves the slow-contests and the set shot. You have to work for those! Move and ye shall receive– see Kyle Korver. You don’t need a shooting coach to solve your problems, you need game speed practice and you need confidence. If you’re slow and “soft” in practice, you sure will be in games.

Point guards, watch Rondo. Watch Nash. If they’re standing still it’s for a reason. Rondo is going left then right then left then right before he even considers pulling up for a jump shot. Ever on their toes, their point guard training consists of continuous ball handling AT FULL SPEED! There is no way to stop them without fouling because you can’t stop their dribbling. There is no basketball coach in the world who can stop a Chris Paul as long as he wants to keep his dribble and keep moving.

Where an individual basketball trainer really can help you is with refining your game. Every NBA player has a private basketball coach and a personal basketball trainer. And they all can improve from where they are now. From Miami to Boca Raton, Florida, I can show you how you can not be stopped. With confidence, knowledge and refined ball handling, you are your only obstacle.
